Protecting Your Cat’s Urinary Tract
Cranberries can also help keep your cat’s urinary tract healthy. Unfortunately, cats can be particularly prone to urinary tract infections. Luckily, cranberries help stop bacteria from sticking to the cell lining of the urinary tract – the main way of preventing such infections. This also means it helps to prevent those nasty infection-induced struvite stones. We’re pretty sure your cat will be very grateful.
The science-y reason for this is because cranberries contain tannins called proanthocyanidins. These are plant compounds that are great at preventing bacteria from getting too cosy. Whilst this mainly works against pathogenic bacteria, there is also some evidence of mild antimicrobial activity against other types of bacteria too. Pretty great, hey?
